Business Developer duties and responsibilities

Business Developers are responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with other companies. Examples of Business Developer duties and responsibilities include:

  • Identify and research potential clients
  • Develop and maintain client relationships
  • Coordinate with sales teams to develop mutually beneficial proposals
  • Negotiate contract terms with clients and communicate with stakeholders
  • Monitor project teams to ensure contracts are executed as agreed
  • Gather useful information from customer and competitor data
  • Make and give presentations to prospective clients and internal executives

Business Developer skills and qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability in business-to-business (B2B) sales
  • Impeccable verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies
  • Familiarity with the industry including equipment, logistics and supply-chain management
  • Problem-solving skills to propose mutually beneficial solutions
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
  • Ability and willingness to travel for meetings with prospective and existing clients

Business Developer education and training requirements

A good Business Developer candidate usually has a bachelor’s degree in business management, industrial technology or a related discipline. However, demonstrated experience is often acceptable in place of formal education. A quality Business Developer candidate may have non-degree credentials such as certification as a Business Relationship Management Professional or a Certified Business Relationships Manager offered through the Business Relationship Management Institute. Most training a Business Develop receives is on the job while gaining experience in sales and business development. 

Business Developer experience requirements

Business Developer candidates should have prior experience with business-to-business sales and a demonstrated ability to achieve sales goals. Experience in project management, industrial technology, supply-chain management and logistics also indicates a quality Business Developer candidate. Additionally, prior experience specific to the industry may contribute to the success of Business Developer candidates. Business Developers with leadership skills from previous management jobs are also valuable.
